BIRTH of a Book 101 - Plus Free Title Checker/Creator

The very first steps - The Cover - The Title -  and Marketing!

Our Illustrious member Ben has a lawn care business. He wants to make a book to complement his business, AND teach teenagers how to start their own lawn care business, AND be profitable!

What’s the first step?
By now you should know — The Cover!
So I came up with this for him, just a first draft so he could see the direction we were going:
benbookCover1stdRAFT.png
Not bad, but the title is, uh...määäh!

There are basically two methods to create your new title:
1.) The Amazon method
2.) The old way – copy writing and optimizing

Amazon method:

1.) Go to amazon.com and start typing the first word of your title in the search field.
2.) Watch what pops up and note the “strings” of words that result.
3.) Use one of these strings in your title, or make the entire title a “string”.

This is a great method, that should help your book rank and trigger Amazon’s algorithms. But in this case, with a lawn care business guide, do we really want to make another “How To Guide”? This would make a really boring title, AND it would put the book in a highly competitive category. Instead there is a better way, the “old way”, and we can still put the keywords from the amazon method in our subtitle and description to make the book rank. This is important(!), you don’t have to use the amazon method for your title, but can move those keywords elsewhere, otherwise we are damned to come up with some very boring titles that everyone else already has.

The old way:

There are tons of books and blogs about copy writing techniques, I am going to give you the distilled version which I have gleaned from John Locke, Kay Tardiffe, Tim Ferris, Noah Kagan and Charlie Hoehn

1.) Your title should be 1-5 words, preferably 1-3.

2.) “YOU” and “YOUR” are very effective in a title; e.g. “You can cure…” or “You can make money doing ….”

3.) Brainstorm your title:  come up with at least 25 different titles. You may think this is too many, but it’s usually around the 25th or 30th title where your brain loosens up and you finally come up with the right one!

Then 4.) Ask yourself these questions (the same as in the tool):

1.) Is it memorable?
2.) Does it reflect the actual concept of the book?
3.) Will it target the right readers?
4.) Does it make you want to buy the book? – “oooh I gotta have that!”
5.) Would your friends pass this on to their friends?
6.) Is the title controversial? Does it spark a conversation?
7.) Is your title franchisable? –e.g. James Bond,1,2,3,4,…
8.) Is the domain name available? MybookTitle.com etc.
9.) Is somebody else already using your title? –argh!! (This is actually not a problem if it is a small title <2 words.)

Remember, you really gotta BRAINSTORM it, usually around the 30th title you will finally start thinking out of the box, and it will just come to you.

DO NOT WORK IN A VACUUM! Get your friends help and feedback.

There is nothing like feedback from your customers, so make sure you get feedback from people whose opinions you respect and that might actually buy the book or are interested in the subject.

This is what it looked like after we brainstormed and plugged it into the tool:
2015-03-15-201140_1680x1050_scrot.png
Then you answer the questions in the boxes on the left with “y” or “n”, the spreadsheet automatically changes the colors of the cells.
“Mow The Money In - Your First Teenage Business” won!
Much better than “How to start a teenage business guide” etc.
So I got to work on the cover again:

C:\Users\th94zt\Downloads\BOOKS\BENS-BOOK\benbookCover1.png
Not so bad, but I wanted the cover to “pop” more, here are the next versions:
BenScover1.png
C:\Users\th94zt\Downloads\BOOKS\BENS-BOOK\benbookCover5.png

After a second and third round with his friends and potential customers, we chose the title with the white lettering.

Then Ben printed this cover out and took it to the street!
He asked business owners and shop owners if he could put his flyer on their board, or stack it next to the cashier. He’s also putting it up in tennis courts where he has gotten a few customers already.

Remember this: Your marketing starts before you write ONE word!

Now Ben is on his way to a successful book launch, BUT, there is one or two more very important things he must do now:

COLLECT EMAILS!

The next step is a landing page for Ben’s book so he can collect those emails. Ben already has a business so he may be able to integrate his book into his business website. This is a very tricky thing now; what is better? Should he put it on the first page of his business website? Or should he make a separate landing page for the book alone? Well? What does contemporary internet wisdom say? — CHOOSE BOTH!

WHEN YOU CAN, CHOOSE BOTH — THEN TEST, TEST, TEST!

Ben is working on his websites right now, we will get back to you when he’s done. Also stay tuned for his book launch.

In the meantime, I want to give you this wonderful title creator/checking tool!
Here it is my friends, download it, make a copy of it in your google docs and brainstorm every title with your friends, and family, and most of all, your target customers! It only costs you an email:

I made this spreadsheet title checker/creator based on a magnificent post by Charlie Hoehn, it is linked in the top left box. Charlie, if you’re reading this — THANK YOU!

Sensei's Book - Ebook Makeover & Repair

By Eric Z get more from him here SUBSCRIBE

Back in the 90’s I learned Judo from a real live Samurai in Orange County — Nori Bunasawa .  He’s what we call a “rock”. You can't move him, but he can move you. When a good Judoka gets ahold of you, it’s an uneasy feeling, they are always one step ahead and can manipulate your balance — to their advantage.  However, when a real master gets ahold of you, it’s much, much more profound. The famous words were “It’s like fighting with an empty shirt”!
A judo master isn’t just one step ahead of you, he’s hundreds of steps ahead of you.  He’s levels above you, orders of magnitudes above you.  When a normal black belt gets ahold of you in judo, it’s an uneasy and annoying thing, they manipulate your balance and throw you. If done well, in a perfect arc. But when you randori with a master, it’s like falling into nothingness. You’re almost afraid of what’s going to come next, because you know any bit of force you use will be transferred into something else — not in your favor. “Fighting with an empty shirt!”
This is the magic known as judo. Getting the perfect throw, especially against someone bigger than you, is much more magical than scoring a knock-out punch in a boxing match. It’s the perfect culmination of speed, force, and movement, applied at the perfect time, with maximum efficient use of mind and body. That’s real judo, and once you do achieve this, you will be hooked!
Mr. Bunasawa is the real deal, a real Sensei in the traditional sense. If you want to learn real traditional judo then go to Bunasawakai.

You can understand my excitement when I stumbled upon a book about the Judo legend Mitsuyo Maeda in Amazon, written by my Sensei!

However, there is room for improvement in the cover. And look what happened to the formatting:
Screenshot 2015-05-02 at 00.26.10.png

Looks like someone uploaded a word.docx — look at the Table of Contents! That just won’t do. So I immediately set off to making him some new covers:
iIgnt_
iIlY5I
iIhCk0
iIlKPn
iIjSn0
iIldxt

This last one is my definite favorite. Although the ones with the beige background I found much more visually pleasing, we are going for eye-catching thumbnails in Amazon right? In that case the first and last ones win — hands down.
Next we gotta work on that manuscript and some better formatting.

To be continued....

The Hunter, The Artist, and the Psychologist -- How to Ace Your Next Book Cover Prelude

The Hunter, The Artist, and the Psychologist — How to Ace Your Next Book Cover PRELUDE.
By Eric Z follow him on Twitter HERE

On the way from Hamburg to San Francisco I did some research for my next FREE book. (Well, it’s going to be free for YOU subscribers only of course.)

Here is a quick breakdown of the book “ACE THE COVER — SELL MORE BOOKS”.

STEP ONE

The Hunter
The first step is to research what others are doing in your category/field.
What are you going to do better? How are you going to beat them!?

STEP TWO

The Artist
Now make your cover and make it “pop”!
How is your cover going to stand out in the sea of competitors? How are you going to catch the eye of your customer?

STEP THREE

The Psychologist
How are you going to compose the title?
  1. To rank in Amazon and “trigger” their Algorithms
  2. To catch your customer’s eye AND set it apart from the rest — your competition’s?

I went to the bookstore in the Airport and started blatantly taking pictures — James Bond style:

This is a good example of a graphic cover, high contrast and brilliant colors. “DIE DREI” is however a big popular series in Germany, kind of like Sherlock Holmes is to England:
Foto0729.jpg

This is my favorite book cover of the year, “DARKMOUTH” by Shane Hegarty — HOWEVER— when we are making Ebook covers, we also have to think about how this cover will look in GREYSCALE. Red on black letters look great, but not in grey scale. The cover below may not look good in grey scale either:
Foto0730.jpg

Although I like the Darkmouth cover better, this one below is a better bet, high contrast and definitely interesting, and definitely looks good in grey scale too:
Foto0731.jpg

Here is an example of what NOT TO DO, for EBooks. This cover looks fantastic on the physical book in the store. But the red letters are the same as the background in grey scale. It really doesn’t matter that much, since the thumbnail in Amazon is also full color. However, the cover in your kindle is going to look like just one grey blob:
Foto0734.jpg

I don’t know how you feel about the Author’s name being so huge, but I think it is narcissistic and terrible. I don’t care who the author is, I care about the content! Otherwise looks like a pretty good eye-catching cover. Notice also the use of a badge or seal, “Der Spiegel Bestseller”. Spiegel is huge in Germany, like Time magazine in the US. However, I couldn’t care less about their bestseller list. The point is the psychological effect on the buyer of the badge:
Foto0735.jpg

This is a GREAT example of POP. Notice how the artist used DROP SHADOW on only one element, the beetle in the middle. Definitely an A-1 cover here. Notice again the use of a badge or seal “Vox Top Thriller” — who the heck is Vox? — who cares? (The buyer!):
Foto0736.jpg

I think this one is excellent because of the composition. High contrast person on the left, information on the right. Notice again a meaningless badge from “Der Spiegel”:
Foto0737.jpg

Here is the Zbooks award for the  WORST cover of the year. A cover with a cräppy photo on it, total balogney composition (look at that background! — määäh), and meaningless badges:
Foto0738.jpg
However the year isn’t over yet.

This is my favorite eye-catcher so far. When you see this in the books store, YOU GOTTA PICK IT UP! I watched for about 20 minutes, EVERYONE picked up this book, they couldn’t pass it up, just because of the cover!

Foto0739.jpg

Another great one that juxtaposes boring brown backgrounds with vibrant burning center photos. Also notice the loose RULE OF THIRDS and again a seemingly meaningless badge/seal:
Foto0740.jpg

I couldn’t resist the next two covers because of the “DER”!
“DER HEALING CODE”. Why don’t they just use the English “THE HEALING CODE”?! Otherwise a good looking balanced cover:
Foto0742.jpg

Another “DER” cover. Totally boring, BUT, using psychology to grab the potential customer: “THE CIA TORTURE REPORT” — it works!
Foto0743.jpg

Another example of psychology at work.  In Europe America is a real money maker, so the more controversial you can be, the better.
P.Scholl-Latour’s “WORLD POWER IN QUICKSAND”:
Foto0744.jpg

Below is an example of a totally AWFUL cover with totally AWFUL content — BUT! — T. Piketty has an ace up his sleeve, he got Paul Krugman and other big wigs to endorse his book — boom! — instant bestseller = instant money. Thanks nepotism!
Foto0745.jpg

Here’s another really great high contrast cover, but again, red looks terrible in grey scale:
Foto0748.jpg

I included this one because of the excellent example of  the golden ratio at work. If you superimpose a pentagram on this cover you will see everything fits EXACTLY on a line or edge of the pentagram. Also notice the use of a golden seal. Please, if you are going to use a seal use a golden one and not a lame “DER SPIEGEL” one!
Foto0749.jpg
5star-2.jpg

Here is my favorite cover so far. The gold leaf on the green bamboo background looks so good, I wanted to buy this book just because of the cover! They also employ a hologram seal which in my opinion doesn’t come across that well:
Foto0750.jpg

Another diet book. Not so sure about the background photo here, actually, I think it’s terrible. BUT — the little cartoon figures and the gold hologram seal work well:
Foto0751.jpg

My favorite cover of all times, balance, contrast, golden ratio, intense colors, great composition, less is more:
Foto0752.jpg

I’m really bummed out about this next one. Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite authors. If you don’t like science fiction, you should try Isaac anyway, he is the master. His books are simply awesome. Which makes this dud of a cover total garbage, especially for a science fiction fan:
Foto0754.jpg

This cover is totally confusing. It looks like a gay romance book, but if you read the back cover: they are selling it as an action book. WRONG! Don’t confuse your reader if you want to sell books — duh!
Foto0755.jpg

It is the year 2015 — SEX SELLS AND EVERYONE IS BUYING — still! Or have we reprogrammed humans’ DNA? Nope didn’t think so. Here is a damned clever way to get your customers’ attention: a sexy woman on the binding — works even when it’s stuffed in the shelf!
Foto0756.jpg

That’s it for now my friends. I am writing this book as we speak. I will even A-B test the cover with Adwords. Keep an eye on your mailboxes because your FREE book is coming soon.

THE COVER - THE COVER - THE COVER!!!

What is the VERY first step?
What is the very first step in writing a book?
Believe it or not, it is the cover!
Why?
Because we have to go from a PUSH system to a PULL system.

Quick reminder:

A PUSH system is when we: 1.) lock ourselves in a room and write books that we love like crazy, 2.) then we publish them, 3.) then we try to get people to buy them.

TOTALLY BACKWARDS!

It's called PUSH because we just "push" the product out there and then see who takes it.

An old anecdote says that this was the turning point for McDonalds. Remember when you could go into any McD's and see all the hamburgers waiting there in the tray for the workers to take them as needed?

Well not anymore! They make them on demand now. This has supposedly contributed millions to McD's success.

A PULL system is where we: 1.) do Product(book) Validation first, to see if people are actually in love with the book as much as we are. 2.) If there is indeed some resonance, then we 3.) Make the book and market it.

They "pull" it from you -- on demand.

THIS IS THE RECIPE OF ALL SUCCESSFUL AUTHORS!!!

Without exception!

Even some of the authors who are on a push system are still indirectly validating their books by choosing a hyperlucrative category and only emulating (sometimes downright copying) the other successful books.

So what role does the cover play in switching from a PUSH to a PULL system?

We need to find out (validation) what people actually want, if they really will buy our book.

This is where the cover comes in handy.

1.) We make the cover first...

2.) Then we distribute it to our friends, our facebook groups, our mailing lists and ask them:
Help! Which cover is better? (e.g. you have two versions and send both)
Hey friends, do you want to buy this book? PayPal me 5$ and get it for 50% off the normal price!
This is called the "pre-sales" technique -- you don't make the book until you get enough hard sales.
I want to make a book, TITLE X, can you help me? Looking for contributors!
They get a free copy of the book when you are done and more importantly they WRITE REVIEWS FOR YOU IN AMAZON!
You can also make a group of BETA-READERS for this method.

Do you see now how much more superior this -- the PULL -- method is than the PUSH method?

First, you don't waste any time on books that nobody will buy.

Second, you get people interested before you even write a single word -- you "bake" the marketing into your book.

Third, when you do launch you have a pool of people ready and rearing to go!

TOTALLY SUPERIOR TO ANY PUSH METHOD!

This is exactly the model that E.L. James did with Shades of Grey.

She started the book out by writing fan fiction in a Twilight forum.

This thread of hers became so popular that she had hundreds of fans in the forum already.

She basically finished the book in the forum! -- then when she was done she closed the thread and brought all of those readers over to her Ebook in Amazon!

THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE!

And the rest is history -- You know the rest of her story.

And (I have read 50 shades) if you read the book, you will be constantly asking yourself, "what the hell is all the hype about? It's not that great!"

Well E.L.James showed us how it's done:

First you got to a "PULL" system and see if people are interested.
Notice I didn't say "generate" interest!

Second you give them what they want.

That's it in a nutshell.

But there is another reason why we make the cover first.

PEOPLE BUY THE COVER!

It is the art of packaging, and as sad as it sounds -YES- a book is judged and BOUGHT by the cover.

So you must ACE the cover.

It's the first thing people see in Amazon and it decides to 99% if they will read any blurb or description.

I have not seen a case study about this, some people say it is 75% of the success rate, I say it is 99%!

Another reason to make the cover first, is to see if your cover is any good:

Try different covers with the same title -- see how people react, adjust accordingly!

SUMMARY

1. The cover of your book is the single most important part of the PROCESS.
You gotta ace it before you go on.

2. We MUST move from a PUSH system to PULL system
Validate your book first, in a forum or by sending your cover to everyone.

I hope this article was of value to you and you will try this simple technique to validate your books and save yourself some time in the process.
